WEEK IN REVIEW

04/08 Thursday:
Thursday I was at the Quest's Ascot room for the Killingtons to check out two local bands I hadn't seen in a while; Shadow Box and Landing Gear. All three band played good sets despite the hindrance of playing a room with giant columns all over the place. I've only ever heard really good sound there once and that show, the Thievery Corporation, was absolutely packed and the bodies served squelch the weird echoes that usually plague Ascot Room shows. Thursday I also bought the bullet and got tickets to BRMC after finding several dead-ends along the road to free-ticketdom. Afterwards we went over to First Ave for Mel Gibson and his pants. We didn't quite get there in time for Poor Line Condition and couldn't quite make it through Plate-o-Shrimp so Mel has been saved for another day.

04/09 Friday:
Confession time: Friday while waiting for something to do I got sucked into JAG, it always happens, this is why I usually try to stay away from the TV on a Friday. After the spell was broken I watched the first bit of the Timberwolves game the headed to a great dive bar, The Hexagon. The Hex was hosting a Beatifics show with Cairan (The Idle Hands) opening as a solo act called The Staring Contest. The music was great, the beer was as cheap as the decor.

04/10 Saturday:
The Natural History cancelled their Saturday show at 7th St. because they didn't want to be the openers. Too bad as there was a packed house to see locals Friends Like These and the debut of the Olympic Hopefuls. The Hopefuls were formerly called Camaro and feature members several great local bands including Vicious Vicious, Kid Dakota, and Alva Star. They sported orange track suits and played spirited pop songs culled from the best that each of the songwriters had to offer. I was lucky enough (as soon as I found a ride anyway) to host the afterbar and the party raged 'till nearly dawn.

04/12 Monday:
The usual Monday routine Luce - show - Luce. The show of course was the Black Rebel Motor Cycle Club, my favorite rock band these days. The crown was sparse allowing me to push my way up to the front and a good vantage point. Closing with Heart and Soul and Punk Song (Whatever Happened to my Rock and Roll?) I knew there was no way that the Rapture could follow. I kept asking my cousin, a teenage songwriter in his right what he thought of the Rapture and he kept saying, "I don't know, I've never heard anything like it." The Rapture reminded me a bit of The Happy Mondays or early Stone Roses which probably gives them too much credit. They have danceable beats but they mire themselves in jam band mentality to ever get off the ground. Nick of BRMC was spotted later at Luce but after talking to him briefly at the 400 Bar show and deciding he was a bit of a prick I decided to let the gawkers chat him up. Leaving Luce for Harvey's we sampled their free chili bar but never got around to buying drinks. (Which ARE cheap; buck for any tap) Walking back to my bike which was parked outside Luce I was confronted by a stage hand who asked me curtly "Where's Nick?" Not immediately recognizing her or her question I simply said that I didn't know. "So he's just wandering around the city?" I realized than who she was talking about and had to stifle a chuckle about her missing rock star.

04/13 Tuesday:
Pixies. I had my expectations set pretty low to protect myself from disappointment. It wasn't necessary. They sounded at least as good as the CDs I grew up on. I'll leave the show review to a friend. After waiting for a half hour to buy a live CD of the show (weird to see them pulling a CD of a show you just heard out of a box clearly delivered by UPS) we headed to the Triple Rock to wax about the show. For the second week in a row stiff drinks on the top of early evening HappyHouring (Nami and 1/2 price bottles at Luce) made for an earlier evening and a stop at the Hard Times for food.
